There is no pregiven territory of which we can make a map—the map-making itself brings forth the features of the territory.
Fritjof Capra, The Web of Life
My life is very different today than it was a few months ago. I am certain yours is too. Amidst the profound changes, I lost my writing routines. New necessities emerged. Oddly, it is in moments like these that we have an opportunity to notice what we care about…
When I was in my late twenties, my lifelong practice of curating life-affirming resources first surfaced. In my early 30s, the emergence of desktop publishing gave that practice wings. And the World Wide Web gave my practice global presence and participation in connected conversation.
Since the SARS-CoV-2 virus made the leap into our human species, and the zoonotic COVID-19 disease has swept around the world, all of my curating skills pivoted to identifying and sharing accurate information on the virus and testing, and the changing landscape for work in my state.
So this morning when I made the time to sit with a cup of tea in hand beside the dog on the couch to take a look at a new book that arrived yesterday, I had a moment of coming home. If you’ve been reading Mindful Digital Life for a while, you know birds are a pretty constant thread. For example, here’s a post I wrote January 24 titled “Bird Tales“.
In the preface, the author and illustrator tells the reader that this book started out in his mind to be a “bird guide for kids.” And it morphed to become a guide for everyone—kid, beginning bird watcher, or advanced. It is beautiful. Sitting there with this big book in my lap brought me home to how much I love sharing resources that help me to live a more conscious, caring, connected life.
Posts I especially appreciated this week
NAMLE, the National Association for Media Literacy Education, offers a page of resources on how to spot COVID-19 misinformation.
Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive and Survive in Their Digital World, has a thoughtful piece in EdSurge on rethinking how we relate to technology and kids today. Focus on supporting leadership.
Event Alert
I offer a few workshops a year with ParentsPlace. I’m doing this one—Mindful Technology for Challenging Times—May 28, 1–2pm Pacific.
And finally…
I may be writing a bit more intermittently. We shall see. Meanwhile, reach across the social distance divide and say hello anytime. I’d love to hear from you.
Be well.
