I am moving. It’s an interesting conversation with stuff that occasionally slides from conversation into confrontation. My more-than-usual focus on the external details has given me a little less patience with the digital. I did manage to log wild turkeys for the Great Back Yard Bird Count (how’d you do?). Turkeys are not as easy to photograph as I’d anticipated.
Conversation Catalysts
Last week I offered a few links about the use of facial recognition and surveillance technology in schools and on college campuses as topics for family conversations about technology. One post was about Syracuse University and their use of surveillance technology on campus. This week I am adding another post to that thread as input for your conversations—this one covers a recent decision regarding the use of facial recognition technology at UCLA—students played a significant role in the outcome. According to Motherboard/VICE, “Following complaints from its student body, UCLA officials have decided not to deploy facial recognition software in its security cameras on campus.”
As always, thank you for reading. I’ll be taking a break from writing while I transition to a new home. I’ll be back sometime in March. Stay tuned.
